How feasible is Elon Musk’s idea to establish a colony on Mars in the 2020s?
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and founder of companies such as PayPal and Tesla Motors, has previously spoken about the potential opportunity for colonizing Mars. The topic was recently brought up on Quora, questioning the practicality of the idea of colonizing Mars. Respondents included a physicist/planetary scientist as NASA Kennedy Space Center and the former Head of Talent Acquisition at SpaceX. The NASA scientist, who claims to have collaborated with Elon’s staff on technologies that could potentially allow for “living off the land” in Mars, fully supports the idea and speaks optimistically about the feasibility of the project. Additionally, the former employee at SpaceX defends the billionaire against claims made that the whole topic is a PR stunt that gains personal profits for Elon.
All in all, most of the answers held optimistic views about the feasibility of colonizing Mars; however, most argued that the project is unlikely to be ready by the next decade, but rather will require longer planning and testing before execution.
